Marolf, Brown, Vis, Olson, and Grossman Top Night 1 of Harvest Hustle

by Brian Neal
Donnellson, IA (Friday, October 7, 2022) – The first night of the 2022 Harvest Hustle kicked off on a chilly Friday night, but the hot racing action was enough to warm one up. One Hundred and sixteen cars from seven different states signed in to entertain the crowd. When the final checkered flag fell around 11:15 PM, two driver’s visited victory lane for multiple times this year, while three others earned their first of the season at the Lee County Speedway.

Jarrett Brown and Daniel Fellows led the field to green in the 20 lap Sonny’s Super Market Modified feature, with Brown grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Drew Janssen and Dustin Smith. While Brown set the pace out front, Spencer Diercks, who started 8th, and Denny Eckrich, who started 11th, were trying to work their way towards the front. The action was slowed on lap 8, when Mike Tomlinson spun in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Brown jumped back out front, with Janssen and Diercks glued to his back bumper. Three laps later the second and final caution of the race appeared, as debris in turn 2 brought out the yellow. Brown once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Janssen and Diercks still giving chase. Despite lapped traffic over the final two laps of the race, Brown would hold on to claim his first win of the season at the track. Janssen was 2nd, Eckrich was 3rd, Diercks was 4th, with Fellows rounding out the top 5.

Up next was the 20 lap Donnellson Tire & Service Stock Car feature, with Beau Taylor and Dustin Vis drawing the front row. Vis would take advantage of his draw to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Taylor and Jason See. Taylor, John Oliver Jr., who started 8th, and See tried everything to get by Vis over the first half of the race, but he was able to keep them behind him. The final half of the race was a struggle, as four caution flags in the final 6 laps slowed the pace. The final one appeared on lap 18, which set up a two lap dash to the finish. Vis would hold off Johnny Spaw, who started 12th, on the restart to pick up his fourth win of the season at the Lee County Speedway. See was 3rd, Andrew Schroeder drove from 17th to 4th, with Taylor coming home in 5th.

Darin Weisinger Jr. and Mack Mulvany made up the front row for the 20 lap Iowa Corn Growers Association Late Model feature, with Weisinger Jr. jumping out front to lead lap 1 over Mulvany and Mark Burgtorf. The one and only caution of the race appeared on lap 3, as Bryan Klein spun in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Weisinger Jr. moved back out front, with Burgtorf and Mulvany glued to his back bumper. On lap 6 Burgtorf used the momentum off the top of the track coming off turn 4 to edge Weisinger Jr. at the line to take over the top spot. Four laps later, lap 10, Nick Marolf slipped past Weisinger Jr. for the runner up spot and then went to work on Burgtorf for the lead. Burgtorf, who was working the bottom, and Marolf, who was up top, ran laps sixteen and seventeen side-by-side, before Marolf took control of the race on lap 18. Marolf then held off Burgtorf thru lapped traffic on the final lap to score his third win of the season at the track. Weisinger Jr. was 3rd, Jaden Fryer came from 10th to finish 4th, with CJ Horn finishing 5th after starting in 12th.

Up next was the 18 lap Roberts Tire Center Northern SportMod feature, with Joe Roller and Sean Wyett leading the field to green. Wyett took advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Roller and Jim Gillenwater. While Wyett paced the field out front, Logan Anderson, who started 8th, and Dakota Girard, who started 12th, were working their way towards the front. The pace was slowed for the first time on lap 7, as Colby Heishman spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Wyett and Tony Olson traded slide jobs, with Wyett keeping the lead..The heated battle up front was slowed for the second and final time of the race on lap 16, as Cole Gillenwater spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Wyett, Olson, and Anderson raced three wide for the top spot on the restart, with Olson emerging with the lead coming to the white flag. Olson then held off Anderson on the final lap to claim his first win of the season at the track. Girard got by Wyett on the final lap to claim 4th.

The final feature to take to the track was the 15 lap AVIS Car Rental Sport Compacts, with Chandler Fullenkamp and Jack Pflum, who inherited the front row after Noah Kayser was a scratch, making up the front row. Pflum grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Fullenkamp and Michael Grossman, who charged up from 8th. Grossman then overtook Pflum for the lead on lap 2, and then started to pull away when the red flag was displayed on lap 9. Blake Driscol got upside down in turn 4 to bring out the red. He would climb from his car okay. On the restart Grossman jumped back out front, with Pflum and Chandler trying to keep pace. Without another caution to bunch the field up, there was no catching Grossman on this night. As he pulled away to score his first win of the season at the Lee County Speedway. Pflum was 2nd, father Chuck Fullenkamp overtook son Chandler late to finish 3rd, with Kimberly Abbott coming from 12th to round out the top 5.

Races For Friday, September 23rd Have Been Cancelled

Unfortunately mother nature is going to win tonight. With the rain we received on Wednesday, we have not been able to get equipment on the track. The bottom half is still very soft. And with the forecast calling for more rain today, and the cool temperatures, it will not allow things to dry out.

The make-up SpotMod feature will likely be ran on Friday, October 7th. An official announcement will be made and posted in a few days.

We will look at trying to make up the Hart Limited Modified Series portion, if we can fit it into the 2022 schedule. However the Sprint Invaders portion will not be made up.

Don’t forget about the Monster Truck show happening Sunday.
